1  Group Culture

We are committed to an environment that is inclusive and free from discrimination and harassment.

We strive for a culture of mutual respect in all of our communications, meetings, and policies. Please demonstrate respect for all lab members and collaborators by, for example, practicing active listening, speaking only for yourself and not others, and asking constructive questions. Mutual respect for each other’s time includes being prepared (including drafting agendas), planning ahead, and starting/ending meetings at the scheduled time.

1.1 Working Hours

Lab members are encouraged to work efficiently and effectively on a schedule that works well for them. We do not support a culture of overwork!

We do not expect you to be working in the evenings or on weekends. Dr. Li and your collaborators sometimes may be working at odd hours (that fits their schedule) and occasionally you will receive emails, Slack messages, or notifications from shared document on overleaf or Google Doc during non-working hours (when we forget to do scheduled messages). You are not expected to reply to them right away. You should treat slack messages with the same urgency as replying to emails and a reply within 24 - 48 hours is fully appropriate.

We embrace time off and vacations! To minimize unintended disturbance, you can set your Slack status when you are on vacation.

1.2 Trainee Support, Access, and Accommodations

Your physical and mental health are incredibly important. Please familiarize yourself with the mental health and crisis assistance resources available for students at UCSC. UCSC has great physical education program including many water sport courses. Many students in the past have taken advantage of them.
