4  Funding

Funding sources for our group members vary and Dr. Li is happy to discuss funding-related questions. Normally, Dr. Li will support students on GSRs for as much time as possible, but the funding situation in the US since 2025 has changed dramatically so it is a topic with much uncertainty currently.

4.1 For Graduate Students

Graduate students may be funded by training grants, research grants, individual fellowships, and other sources.

Internal UCSC fellowship funding opportunities include:

• Baskin Engineering and Dissertation-Year Fellowships
• Graduate Dean’s Research Travel Grant
• Our department sometimes have summer fellowships for research and travel to conferences

External fellowship funding opportunities include:

• NSF GRFP

Some conferences have student or early career researcher travel awards, some examples include:

• JSM travel award from SFASA
• WNAR travel award / student paper competition
• SBSS travel award / student paper competition Similar awards exist for other sections of ASA as well.
